Where better to start looking back over 20 years of Complete Lifestyle and Sports Success (@classsw) than Lucy Shuker; 5 times Paralympian, 3 times Paralympic medalist and Paris 2024 flag bearer!
I started working with Lucy in 2006, prior to her first Paralympics in Beijing 2008. Beijing proved successful for Lucy, taking Bronze in the doubles. She then gained another Bronze medal in London 2012. Whilst perhaps some of the most memorable, these are just some of Lucy’s Achievements over the years. In addition she has a highest world ranking of 3; over 30 career titles; World Team Cup medallist amongst others.
The training with Lucy was a mix of on court speed and agility work and off court work in the gym. I even had some wheelchair races with Lucy-some more successful than others. However along with a go at wheelchair tennis myself it gave a great insight into the training requirements.
Over time training evolved with medicine ball throwing and boxing work along with reactionary ball games.
In the gym Lucy did more strength work in the small off season periods along with more explosive power training closer to competition, and all the time looking at common wheelchair tennis injury prevention.
It was a privilege to work with Lucy and she has deservedly achieved and continues to achieve so much.
