“A Remarkable Recovery”
James was one of the most rewarding clients I have had the pleasure to work with.
Back Story:
James was a highly active individual, participating in a number of sports such as hockey, tennis, cricket and golf and many to a high standard. He was also a keen skier.
James was involved in a serious car accident and sustained multiple injuries; with broken left and right femurs, broken right tibia and fibula and a break in his foot. James underwent a number of surgeries involving many skin grafts some of which were significant in size.
James’s Goals:
The main initial goal was to help James get back to a normal independent lifestyle in particular being able to walk effortlessly again and without a limp. The main challenges he faced were to increase strength and mobility post-surgery.
James was always very determined and was keen to get back to sport and we used this as an opportunity not to just get him back to where he was, but set the challenge (if possible) of improving on his running and movement pre accident.
Training:
I saw James twice a week, initially focusing on mobility in order to enable his leg to straighten, as well as movement drills to help his walking. In addition, he did a variety of strength work to build up his muscles to aid his movement. The movement drills evolved from walking to jogging pace with the emphasis on technique from the outset.
Once James was given the all clear from his surgeon he gradually started jogging and increasing the pace of some of his movement, along with a continual progression of his strength from body weight to utilising bands and then weights. Over time we added more agility to his training to develop the change of direction required for getting back to sports.
The Future:
James has recently seen his consultant and been discharged with the comment that he had made a “remarkable recovery”. He is back to playing golf, tennis and has been in the nets for cricket.
