Wellsprings Leisure Centre Cardiac Rehabilitation Reaches 10th Birthday
Melissa Mccarthy Robert Rowling James Quirk
Ten years ago the first Community based Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation Scheme was launched at the Wellsprings Leisure Centre. The first Client through the doors was Robert Rowling who has been regularly attending the Centre since.
The scheme was established by myself then, the Health Development Officer for Tone Leisure and Melissa McCarthy then the Fitness manager and now overseeing the scheme.
Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation is designed for individuals following a heart attack or cardiac surgery to take part in structured exercise with like individuals and forms the basis for an active lifestyle. This follows an initial exercise programme of exercise and education run in partnership with the Community based cardiac rehabilitation nurses, which also takes place at the Centre.
I still run the classes twice a week at Wellsprings and there are many benefits for the participants of the class. Obviously there is the physical side but probably the best aspect is the confidence gained from the knowledge about how much physically they can achieve along with sharing stories with individuals in similar situations.
